Peace & Democracy eBooks seek to help children and adolescents master ten different ways to improve their lives and our democratic society:
To form partnerships for security
To form partnerships for exploration
To stand in other people’s shoes
To tell personal stories about important events in their lives
To express and manage their feelings
To eat well and exercise regularly
To resolve interpersonal and intergroup conflicts
To embrace democratic values such as liberty, justice, and equality
To understand social obstacles such as racism, violence, and poverty
To use their voices to advocate solutions for important social problems

One of the most important ways to help students prevent violence, improve their reading comprehension, and develop their democratic voices is by coaching them to use their voices to tell their stories and to get help coping with violence; to use their voices to express their critical understanding of stories, texts, and social media; and to use their voices to advocate solutions to important social problems.
The Peace & Democracy eBooks provide models of voice. The Peace & Democracy eBooks activities help students to develop their own voices.

The Boston Education for Democracy Campaign

Now twenty years later, there is once again a resurgence of violence (Globe Dec. 31, 2014) accompanied by the growth of increasing inequality and discrimination (Globe July 15, 2015). The Boston Education for Democracy Campaign is being formed to develop a new set of curricula, instructional practices, and comprehensive school reform components that will provide systemic and lasting ways for overcoming violence, poverty, and discrimination.

The Boston Education for Democracy School

The Boston Education for Democracy School

Every generation must learn anew the lessons of the past and the needs of the future. By establishing a pre-K to 12 professional development school that is dedicated to teacher and student empowerment, we have the opportunity to create an institution that can keep alive and pass along the lessons of democracy in Boston from the last four centuries and more broadly from around the world.

We learned shortly after that class that over eighty percent of these students had witnessed someone being violently attacked that they knew in the last year.
